World Environment Day is just around the corner, and environmental conservation has never been more important. In a world that faces the increasing threat of climate change, diminishing rainforests and more animal species going extinct, environmental groups continue to advocate for change and sustainability.

Here are some ways you can play a part in saving the earth, and support a worthy cause at the same time!

Support environmental organizations

Environmental organizations like WWF, Nature Society Singapore, Conservation International Singapore and others help to campaign for a greener Singapore. These environmental organizations raise awareness about the need to conserve the environment, and play an active role in maintaining the ecosystem. By supporting their work, you’re also helping a larger cause and saving the environment! It’s as easy as making a charitable donation to these organizations or purchasing their products, which go towards their environmental sustainability efforts.

Participate in community cleanup events

As Singapore’s beaches sometimes are subject to water pollution due to irresponsible waste dumping, one way we can all help to save the environment is to participate in cleanup events. Community groups and grassroots organizations do host cleanup events from time to time, and you can sign up as a volunteer. It only takes a little out of your time to volunteer for a few hours, and you can do it with friends!!

Purchase non-animal products

Millions of animals are being killed every year for animal products like shark fin soup, medicinal ivory powder made from elephant tusks and leopard skin bags, with some species becoming critically endangered as a result of overfishing and illegal hunting. Instead of purchasing animal products, choose alternative products instead.

Wildlife Reserves Singapore offers plenty of ethical wildlife-themed souvenirs, and part of their proceeds go to the park’s own conservation initiatives.

Take public transport or make the switch to sustainable fuels

Carbon emissions are a large source of climate degeneration, and most of it comes from cars and factories. Did you know that a single car produces 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year?

To reduce our carbon footprint, consider taking public transport, saving fuel and cost. If taking public transport isn’t for you, diesel fuels are more efficient and produce less carbon emissions than gasoline. Alternatively, you can switch to driving an electric car, which eliminates the problem of carbon emissions and gives you a smoother driving experience.

Live a sustainable lifestyle

Non-biodegradable products like plastics and soft drink cans contribute towards environmental pollution. By using reusable cloth bags or metal straws, we can help to reduce our strain on the environment and do our part to save the earth.

Although fast food restaurants have already stepped up their efforts by switching up plastic straws with paper ones, we can do more by bringing our own reusable tumblers out and saving the use of plastic wherever possible.

Seastainable is one such local company dedicated to selling sustainable items, from metal straws to hand-crocheted wallets. Supporting these eco-friendly companies helps to encourage us to be more environmentally conscious, also making a positive impact on the environment.
